Abstract

Water resources, the major source for agricultural, industrial and civic activities, are constantly threatened due to rapid population growth and industrialization in urban areas. The ponds, being lifeline in the areas, are deteriorating day by day due to the encroachment and liquid and solid waste disposal practices in and around. This paper evaluated and assessed the pollution level of 22 ponds in the Padmanabhapuram town Kanyakumari district, south India. Agricultural activities in and around the study region, including use of fertilizers, leaching of nutrients, result in acute pollution in the majority of water sources in the town. The water samples were collected from 22 ponds of Padmanabhapuram town for the NFSWQI indexing and comprehensive water pollution index analysis. The parameters, such as turbidity, electrical conductivity, pH, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and fecal coliform were analyzed in the Tamil Nadu water supply and drainage board laboratory. Based on the investigation, water quality is categorized as moderately polluted in all the ponds Creating awareness and providing proper scientific treatment for liquid and solid wastes were also proposed, to control and protect the urban ecosystem of this town.
